Dark Angel progress and Victrix Early Imperial Romans
Hi all. I've made some progress with my Dark Angels and started a side project as an attempt to prevent the Dark Angels from burning me out. My painting room is out of action at the moment but my current setup in the dining room is actually making me rethink my layout upstairs! Here's where I'm at now :
It's a pretty comfy table to sit at, definitely better for my posture than my usual old computer desk.
So first up the Dark Angels. I got an eight man tactical squad finished, just need some basing applying when my painting room is back in order. I'm pretty pleased with the overall look, edge highlighting is getting tons easier for me now. I've also started on the Dark Vengeance marines, with three bikes getting near finished and I've started base coating the Deathwing too.
I'm enjoying painting my marines but at certain points the Ravenwing irritated me, particularly painting the white areas. I figured maybe another project to run concurrently would give me a choice of what I fancy painting day by day.
I've always wanted an Imperial Roman army, it's the period in history that interests me most. I did a little reading and it came down to Warlord, Victrix or Aventine. Apparently Warlord come up a little small and Aventine are older metal figures so I went for the modern plastic goodness that Victrix produces. I'm well impressed with them, they assemble easily and have lots of detail, they even come with options to build Praetorian Guard rather than legionaries. They arrived Wednesday and I managed to get these two done by Thursday night!
Now that is very quick progress for me. I've come up with some tricks to make things faster, such as base coating the skin, clothes, shield fronts and basically anything that needs to be a light colour with vallejo heavy skintone all in one go. The heavy skintone goes on over black very nicely and subsequent layers of colour, like the red for the clothing, go on over the skintone almost in one coat.
So that's it for now, I've got today off work and it's raining so I'm going to try to get my Signifer, Vexillifer and Cornicen done (look at me with my big military words). Cheers!
